SF, thanks for last night… after my spell of bronchitis, I returned to going out full force. first, I saw lemonade a the mezzanine. yay. then mi ami, claws and eats tapes at mighty. superyay!
During my illness, I helped produce a good lot of work. Coming up on the 11th and 19th of April, CYMC will be presenting two events built around “WHY I RIDE: FROM LOW TO SHOW” about the lowriders in the mission and the scrapers of oakland. Essentially, it’s a youth produced film featuring amazing archival footage of mission lowriders in the 70s and 80s shot by Ray Balberan. His amazing footage will be screened and discussed at CounterPulse on April 11th. The footage that the CYMC youth edited together with interviews will be screened at the Brava Theater on April 19th. Both events are sure to be inspiring.
Another project we’re working on is a music video with the folks from Youth Movement Records (a youth run record label from Oakland, awesome!). The group is Tha Faculty and the song is called Change the Nation. It’ll give you chills, I promise. I’ll post the link once we get it loaded up. For more visit the cymc website
Of course, there’s always more like teaching young middle school boys from latin america how to make a photo essay of their experience moving to this country, the downtown high school, “so you wanna go to hollywood?” program, the CYMC afterschool internship, and loads more. The youngsters have been tearing up the radio waves… I can’t wait to see what they do next!
